Men Accused of Raping Three Women in Revenge for Lower Caste Wedding

According to the BBC, tension and conflict arose in an Indian village earlier this year when a young woman from an upper-caste Yadav family eloped with a 19-year old man of the Dalit caste, which is the lowest in India’s bizarre caste system. So several dozen Yadav men did what any self-respecting upper-caste man would — they first paraded the young man’s mother and aunts through the village and then gang raped them.

Police have arrested eight people in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for their alleged involvement in the attack. Witnesses told police that about 30 men were involved altogether in the gang rape..

India’s caste system is abolished by law, but, as this incident underscores, it is still solidly entrenched in practice.

UK Fathers Rights Group Disrupts Church of England Service

A UK group calling itself Fathers 4 Justice disrupted a service of the Church of England’s General Synod in order to protest alleged inaction by the church to do more to protect the rights of divorced fathers to see their children.

According to the BBC, the protestors didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome,

Fathers 4 Justice leader Matt O’Connor was earlier rugby tackled and dragged out of the service by church members.

As he picked himself up he shouted: “Remember, half a million children are deprived of contact with their fathers and the church does nothing. Shame on you.”

Twelve protesters were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and assault.

This is the same group that in May threw condoms filled with purple flower at Tony Blair while he was speaking in the House of Commons (so much for new anti-terrorist security measures in the UK!)

Maybe this sort of stuff plays differently in Great Britain — where animal rights activists and other extremists are allowed to commit gross acts of harassment and violence with little fear of significant punishment — but these sort of extremist tactics suggest that there may be good reasons these folks don’t see their children very often. They certainly do themselves and their cause no favors with such assaults.

That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore

An amusing tale of two wanna-be comedians unfolded in the Feminist Majority Foundation’s daily news wire the past couple weeks.

When Slim-Fast dropped Whoopi Goldberg after her round of Bush and Dick jokes at a fundraiser for John Kerry, the Feminist Majority Foundation defended her, noting that “a company spokesperson refused to say whether there was a decrease in sales because of the remarks” and added,

Goldberg was a featured speaker at the massively successful March for Women’s Lives on April 25, which brought more than one million women and men to Washington, DC in support of reproductive rights.

Less than a week later, however, when California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger alluded to the Saturday Night Live skit that used to parody him and referred to California legislators as “girlie men” the Feminist Majority Foundation was suddenly offended at such humor, headlining its coverage of Schwarzenegger’s remarks with “Governor Schwarzenegger Unapologetic for Sexist, Homophobic Remark.” According to the report,

Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, commented on the misogyny that underlies the governor’s comment: “Women are strong. And to denigrate half the human race is pretty sick. But that’s what he’s doing. He’s trying to denigrate the males by denigrating females.”

Ah, the fresh smell of hypocrisy in the morning.

Mayor of London Praises Muslim Cleric Who Defends Domestic Violence

The Scotsman reports that feminist and gay activists in Great Britain protested the arrival of Muslim cleric Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi. Al-Qaradawi is an extremist who has praised suicide bombers, defended domestic violence, and views homosexuality as something that needs to be punished by law. Of course, this being Europe, he was welcomed with open arms by London Mayor Ken Livingstone who describe criticism of Al-Qaradawi as anti-Muslim “hysteria.”

For example, here’s al-Qaradawi on how far a husband may go in punishing his wife,

It is permissible for him to beat her lightly with his hands, avoiding her face and other sensitive parts. In no case should he resort to using a stick or any other instrument that might cause pain and injury.

Peter Tatchell, leader of UK gay rights group Outrage!,

Ken Livingstone would not give a platform to the BNP. Dr. al-Qaradawi is even more extreme. He is an apologist for violence against women, Jews and gay people. We urge the Mayor of London not to host this misogynist, anti-Semitic homophobe.

Instead, Livingstone apologized to al-Qaradawi for the criticism he had to endure and invited him to return to London later this year.

Nursing Moms Must Leave, but Wet T-Shirt Contest Goes On at Restaurant

In the race to the bottom on barring women from breast feeding in public places, a reader pointed out the a recent such dustup at The Hoover House Restaurant in West Branch, Iowa.

A mother tried to nurse her 8-month-old at the restaurant and was asked to either move to the restroom, cover herself more or leave.

This particular incident is notable for two reasons. First, the restaurant’s actions were possibly illegal. In 2000, Iowa passed a law stating that, “A woman may breast-feed the woman’s own child in any public place where the woman’s presence is otherwise authorized.” According to the Des Moines Register, 25 states have such laws protecting breast feeding women.

Second, this particular restaurant apparently has a history of holding wet t-shirt contests, so why they are suddenly offended by semi-exposed breasts is something of a mystery.

As in the Houston mall case earlier this year, about 13 women decided to hold a “nurse-in” at the restaurant in response to the incident.

Attendant at The National Gallery Stops Woman from Breastfeeding

Earlier this month it was a Texas mall that was in trouble after a guard asked a woman to take her infant into the bathroom if she wanted to breastfeed. A few days later, however, Great Britain’s The National Gallery was hit with a similar controversy after an attendant asked a woman breastfeeding her 11-month-old daughter to move to what the BBC describes as a “mother-and-baby room” if she wanted to continue breastfeeding her daughter.

Of course, as pro-breast feeding advocates were quick to point out, this was a bit odd considering that many of the paintings in The National Gallery depict infants breastfeeding. The woman asked to leave, Catherine Gulati, was quoted by the BBC as noting that,

I thought it was ironic because in another room there was a picture of a bare breast with milk squirting out of it called the Milky Way.

As in the Texas mall incident, The National Gallery blamed the incident on an overzealous attendant and said that breastfeeding is allowed anywhere in the gallery.

Jury Acquits Man Who Kissed Client

When computer repairman Steven Allen Moyer, 40, was called to the home of Victoria French, the Idaho man apparently decided that French’s love life could used an upgrade. So he kissed her once or twice and then suggested they move on to the bedroom.

According to Moyer, “She said she didn’t have a boyfriend. I asked her if she wanted a boyfriend for 15 minutes.”

She still didn’t want a boyfriend, so Moyer charged French $20 for the visit and left. Police later arrested him and charged him with battery for the nonconsensual kiss.

But at the end of June a five-man, one-woman jury took only 90 minutes to acquit Moyer of the charge, apparently convinced that the state had failed to show that an unwanted kiss constituted battery.

Elderly Man Sentenced to 12 Months Probation for Killing Wife in UK

A 100-year-old British man was recently sentenced to just 12 months “community rehabilitation” after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of his 87-year-old wife.

Bernard Heginbotham, 100, confessed to slitting the throat of his wife Ida, 87, on April 1 of this year. Ida was living in a nursing home due to her poor health and was scheduled to be moved to a different nursing home.

Bernard apparently believed that his wife would not receive proper care at the new nursing home and killed her in what he believed was an act of mercy. The BBC quoted prosecutor Hilary Banks telling the court that,

He [Bernard] admitted that he went to the home with a weapon and injured his wife which resulted in her death. He didn’t want his wife to be moved again and didn’t think she was going to receive the care he wanted her to have.

In sentencing Bernard to only 12 months community rehabilitation, the judge in the case said,

Bernard Heginbotham, the killing of your wife, to whom you had been married joyously for some 67 years, followed by your attempt to take your own life, was an act of desperation. It was carried out in an effort to end her suffering while you were under intolerable pressure. It was in truth an act of love and I have no doubt you suffered a medical disorder at the time and the responsibility which you bear is substantially reduced.

New Jersey Mandates Mammogram Coverage in Health Insurance

The Associated Press reports that New Jersey governor James McGreevey this month signed a bill requiring private health insurance companies pay for mammograms for covered women under 40 who have family histories of breast cancer.

Most health insurers already pay at least partially for mammograms, but some do not citing the ongoing medical debate about the effectiveness of mammograms in screening for breast cancer. With New Jersey’s change, 47 states now require insurance companies to pay for screening of at least some women under 40.

Regardless, mandates like this are simply a backdoor way of raising insurance rates which helps put basic access to health insurance further out of reach. Women and/or their employers should be free to negotiate whatever terms they like with health insurance companies free of such state-sponsored micromanagement.

Morgan Stanley Settles Sexual Harassment Lawsuit for $54 Million

Investment banker Morgan Stanley this week reached a settlement with hundreds of women who claimed they had been sexually harassed and denied raises and promotions at the company. Morgan Stanley agreed to pay the women $54 million in total.

Since most Wall Street firms require employees to sign contracts requiring that they use arbitrators to settle legal disputes, Morgan Stanley’s trial would have been the first such trial of a brokerage firm had it proceeded.

Forty million dollars of the settlement will go directly to the 340 complainants, while $14 million will be earmarked for anti-discrimination training at the investment firm.
